Ensemble SABIA

MĀRAS DZIESMAS. MARIALES The fusion of medieval Marian songs and Latvian traditional music in one concert program has brought together musicians for whom both of these musical directions are close and integral parts of their creative concert life.

SABIA is a researcher of ancient music, Guntars Prānis, whose expertise plays a significant role in the performance of medieval music. The wind instruments and kokle played by Ieva Nīmane are heard both on the early music stage and in traditional music on a daily basis. With a classical education but rooted deeply in traditional culture, this is the chosen creative path in music for percussionist Mārtiņš Miļevskis. Lastly, the unique voice of Liene Skrebinska reveals the essence of the concert program – in her singing, we can see through the eyes of the Virgin Mary and feel the world through the heart of a young Latvian girl.

Improvisation also plays a significant role in the concert program, and the contribution of each ensemble member to creating new soundscapes in this repertoire is invaluable. The program also includes music composed by ensemble musicians.

The Virgin Mary and Māra – both merge into one image in medieval Marian hymns and in our folk musical heritage, thanks to folk singers such as Domicella Līpeņa, whose songs are included in the concert program, reaching us through the ages.
